DescriptionThe ancient Mediterranean witnessed the rise and fall of several great empires. At the heart of each was a city-state. How did single cities come to dominate their neighbours? How were the experiences of each city-state different and why? This unit compares the material factors and the ideology which lay behind the success and failure of Athens, Rome and Sparta. Why did Rome survive for such a long period while the dominance of the Greek city-states was short-lived? Assessmentone essay of 2,500-3,000 words (50%) and a take-home exam (40%).
